In the realm of copyright in Malaysia, our services encompass the filing of copyright notifications, advisory and enforcement work. Malaysia, as one of the Berne Convention countries, does not require formal registration of copyright, since copyright exists in every work which is eligible for copyright. Nonetheless, clients are advised to take advantage of the voluntary copyright notification (VCN) system introduced in June 2012 for more tangible protection of their works.

Nonetheless, clients are advised to take advantage of the voluntary copyright notification (VCN) system introduced in June 2012 for more tangible protection of their works.
Works which are eligible for copyright include literary works (e.g. novels), musical works (e.g. musical compositions), artistic works (e.g. paintings), and many more, provided sufficient effort has been expended to make the work original and the work has been written down, recorded or otherwise reduced to material form.
The VCN process is relatively quick and straightforward, since there is no substantive examination of submitted copyright works by the MyIPO. Copyright owners may file a VCN together with a copy of their work with MyIPO and receive a Certificate of Copyright Notification in return. The Certificate is prima facie evidence of copyright ownership which strengthens the owner’s position in the event of a dispute.
In 2024, MyIPO introduced the Copyright to You (CR2U) initiative to encourage VCN by expediting the copyright certification and notification process. Since the launch of the initiative, there has been a marked improvement in MyIPO’s turnaround time. This may be the ideal time to obtain formal copyright protection, since the benefit outweighs the relatively modest time and monetary cost.
